Chickens
I love chickens, or as we say, chooks. One of my relations had a large chook pen and I made a point of sketching the chickens each time I stayed with her. On the first day when I set my stool in the middle of the pen, the birds would rush back and forward to get away from me. Scattering a few grains eased the situation only a little. On the second day they were quieter, but still too skittish to draw. By the third day, they were eating the grain near my feet and as long as I stayed still, I was able to sketch them in poses typical for chickens. I have often turned these sketches into paintings and also over the years I have collected some chicken knick knacks in ceramic and carved wood. These objects are the common feature of today’s paintings in this post.
