How 'Farm, Rockhampton' was Crafted

This farm lies on the banks of Coorooman Creek, between Rockhampton and Emu Park. It is a typical farm with big shady green tree and a profusion of sheds and animals. I sketched the sheds and the house from a variety of angles. The shadows of the tree and in the sheds will be an important part of the composition (the darkest dark) and I roughly block in the tree and its shadow early in the painting.

The painting is on priming so I can put paint on and wipe it off again until I'm satisfied with the composition.

Once the painting is dry, some of the more detailed elements are added over the top.

Finishing off is a matter of adding more darks and lights to extend the tonal range and give a sense of depth.
